Pride Lacrosse goes undefeated at Finger Lakes Tournament
The Hill Pride Varsity lacrosse team travelled five hours south this past weekend to take on the competition at the Finger Lakes Lacrosse tournament. This weekend was the first action for the 2008/09 squad. The Pride’s first game saw them take on the host Finger Lakes club. The team started many of their new players and each and every one of them looked great throughout the game. The Pride defeated the team from Finger Lakes 12-1 and were excited to get their first win of the school year. In their second game the Pride Lacrosse team matched up against LB3, a club from upstate New York. The Pride team did not miss a beat from their first game with the exception of a small letdown at the beginning of the second half, and soundly defeated their opponents 12-4. The third game of the day saw the Pride take on perennial NY champions the West Genesee Wildcats. This game may have been the most anticipated in the tournament. The Pride team dug deep, and although they had to play two games back to back took the play to the Wildcats, the final score was 14-4 for the Pride. The lacrosse team entered its fourth game of the day a bit banged up and tired but ready to work for its fourth straight win. This game's opponents would be the Ironduit team. The Pride won the game 9-2 and secured a chance to finish the tournament undefeated with a win in its final game. The final game of the day was against Buffalo Lacrosse Academy. The game was much slower as both teams showed fatigue. The team from Kleinburg pulled out a fifth straight victory with a 13-3 romp over Buffalo.
A great beginning weekend for the Hill Pride Lacrosse team, outscoring their opponents 60-14 over the five games. Players to note from the weekend were Longpole and team captain Jason Noble. Jason was a monster of defense all day and was extra focused on taking the ball away. Both goalies, Dillon Ward and Cam Watts, were excellent at both saving the ball and also moving it up the field. Deron Dempster was great on attack filling the net and taking advantage of his opportunities. The final standouts were both JJ Laforet and team captain Nils Thompson, both midfielders. JJ and Nils had a great deal of poise and were threats offensively and sound defensively all day. The team from Kleinburg will now fine-tune its game for the Tully Cornfield classic, which takes place on Saturday November 8 in Tully, New York.
