Literacy/ Social Science

The grade 7/8s have completed reading and their work on the novel The Boy in the Striped Pajamas. The grade 5/6s are in their final chapters of The Hatchet. Both classes are continuing to identify figurative language used in the story in after-reading activities. We are still enjoying listening to our read-a-loud book Lost in the Barrens by Farley Mowat. SLANT is a term we will continue to reference to help ourselves check in on being respectful learners in the classroom.

The grade 5/6 class has started a unit understanding national and international issues; including some current day topics. In class we are discussing the following questions: What is happening around the world? Why does it matter to us in Canada.

The grade 7/8s have been researching inventions after the War of 1812 up until 1910. The light bulb, kerosene, electric railway, the telephone and a baseball are some of the most impactful inventions of that time. Students are creating an advertisement poster set in that particular time period to market their invention.
