Literacy/ Social Science

The grade 7/8s are currently watching the film The Boy in the Striped Pajamas to compare with the novel they read as a class. We are comparing the two works; identifying some differences between them. They completed their final chapter test on the novel which provided feedback that further practice is needed. The 5/6s are completing the final chapters of The Hatchet. They completed a chapter test this week which included questions testing their knowledge on the types of figurative language.SLANT is a term we will continue to reference to help ourselves check in on being respectful learners in the classroom.

In social sciences, grade 5/6 started a unit exploring what national and international issues are, including some current day topics. In class we are discussing the following questions: What is happening around the world? Why does it matter to us in Canada? The students selected three global issues from a list that they thought were the most important. Based on these selections, groups were formed. Moving forward, we will do a number of activities in these groups with the aim of gaining an expertise on their selected topic. Each group will also get chances to teach and share to the class their findings.
The grade 7/8s have been researching inventions after the War of 1812 up until 1910. The baseball, radar sonar, a carpenter’s screw and the telephone are some of the most impactful inventions of that time. Students submitted an advertisement poster set in that particular time period to market their invention.

Both classes are attempting to draw optical illusions. Most of the students are showing a lot of patience when it comes to finishing this task. We are encouraging everyone to keep an open mind to allow their own hidden Picasso tendencies to shine!

Math/ Science

In Math, the grade 5/6s took time this week to review all subject matter that has been covered in this unit. We reviewed everything from understanding place values to multiplying and dividing decimals. This upcoming Monday we will be writing our final unit test of this term. In Science the 5/6s worked all week on their “Change The World: Design & Build Project”. They finished completing their designs and proposals with the guidance of the teacher. This week we will have two presentation days (Tuesday January 21st & Friday January 24th) where each student will present their idea to the class.

In Math, the 7/8s completed their Ratios, Rates, Percents, & Decimals Quiz on Monday. The rest of the week the class worked towards completing their unit review packet in order to prepare them for their upcoming unit test on Monday January 20th. In Science, the 7/8s completed their Pressure, Volume, and Temperature of Fluids gizmo earlier in the week where they used their knowledge of the properties of fluids to complete the in class assignment.
