Hello Hill Families,
We have officially passed the threshold into the last month of school for this year. It means that there are lots of things going on at the school. There will be galas, games, community building, exams, assignments and lots more. For some this is a time of farewells, seasons beginning, seasons ending, daily life, and life unexpected.
It takes a lot of focus, determination, resilience and commitment, from all parties involved, to embrace expectations and find success at the finish line. Our students are well equipped for this; in following the HILL acronym and non-negotiables, it provides great targets to aim for.
Working on strengthening and developing executive functions is also a major tool that can help us all stay balanced and confident through these busy stretches. Below are some core executive functions and tools and strategies to try if you find yourself needing some extra guidance throughout this stretch:
Planning and Prioritizing: creating strong plans, that use details and time allotments ahead of time is a great first step in studying. Spending the time to think about the; what, when and how can do a lot. Find a planner that works for you and that you will ACTUALLY use. Whether thats a digital calendar, printed sheet, or a physical planner, finding an option that you can build routine with is key.
Time Management: Be specific with the time that you are spending on tasks; like studying, doom scrolling, walking in nature, time with friends, etc... Not everything needs to be planned down to the minute, but conscious choices and awareness of time spent in different areas helps to ensure you are able to spread tasks out and not feel overwhelmed.
Task Initiation: Sometimes, especially when our brains are tired and we have lots going on; starting something can feel heavy. Setting goals for yourself and finding tools that help to motivate you like self-rewards (a snack at the end of the paragraph, 5 minutes on a game etc.) can give the push you need to get started. Creating an environment that makes the task enjoyable also goes a long way; make a playlist, study with friends or family. Find what works for you.
Organization: When we feel like time is limited, sometimes organization can fall by the wayside. The organization of our rooms, desks, life, feels like the last thing we have time for. Making sure we are committing to a base level of organization for ourselves; making sure we have the supplies we need, we have our documents organized and accessible helps mitigate some of the stress that may come.
Attention and Focus: Studies are showing that over the past decades, human attention spans are have begun to get notably shorter. There are many factors that can be linked. There are also many strategies that we can use to help maintain focus. It may be a tool called body doubling; where you have someone else in the space with you independently working or spending time, while you accomplish what you need to. It could be structured periods of time, using timers and alarms to move through various phases. Also, when not focussed on school, you can find low stimulation activities that you commit to, in order to build strengths in focus and attention; like reading, following a recipe, completing a crossword or puzzle. Something that inherently takes time, and does not provide the option of quickly retrieving the answer or solution.
And, yes, I am aware of the irony of this newsletter being very long…
This time of year, like all times of year, are busy and dense, often feeling like they are moving quickly. So, prioritizing ourselves and wellbeing helps to set us up for success in all areas.
For any students who are looking to build these skills and routines, and may need some guidance, please feel free to book an appointment with me. I am happy to discuss all studying, organizational and time management planning.
Have a lovely weekend,
Ms. Walko

Potential NCAA Eligibility Update & Virtual Town Hall
As some members of our community may already be aware through social media or conversations with college coaches, the NCAA is currently considering significant changes to Division 1 eligibility rules. These potential changes could impact our student-athletes, including members of the graduating class this year.
At this time, nothing has been officially announced. However, we are closely monitoring the situation and are prepared to adapt and support our students accordingly. NCAA Division I Board of Directors met on May 22nd but have not settled on any proposed changes.
In response, we are planning to host a virtual town hall meeting when more information becomes available. Please stay tuned for updates on this information session.
Exams and Culminating Tasks
In grades 9-12, 30% of the student’s final grade will be based on a final evaluation administered at or towards the end of the course. This evaluation will be based on evidence from one or a combination of the following: an examination, a performance, an essay, and/or another method of evaluation suitable to the course content.
The final evaluation allows the student an opportunity to demonstrate comprehensive achievement of the overall expectations for the course. Students must complete this evaluation as scheduled. Please note that uniform is required on exam days.
Frequently asked questions are answered here, and the Exam Schedule can be found here.

Apparel Sale
We currently have a number of items on our school website marked down by 40% off. These styles will not be continuing in future collections; however, they will still be permitted as part of the school uniform next year. This is a great opportunity to take advantage of the savings and begin purchasing items for the upcoming school year.
Update on The Nest
We wanted to thank you all for your incredible support of The Nest this school year. It has been such a fun endeavour to bring our student athletes’ needs to fruition, and without your generosity and encouragement, we would not have been able to make it happen.
We would like to let you know that The Nest will be closing as of May 31st. June is a month full of exciting events — including Grade 8 and Grade 12 graduations, exams, and the Junior School Athletic Gala — and we must focus our attention there.
We also want to thank the students who volunteered their time to help us run The Nest. Next year, we look forward to offering many volunteer positions to both our school community and beyond.
Thank you again, and we wish you all a wonderful rest of the school year. Please note that any remaining credit on your nest cards will carry over to next school year.
Warm regards,
The Nest Team
