7-12 Newsletter 05.29.26

May 29, 2026

Hello Hill Families,

Integrity is doing the right thing, even when no one is watching. — C. S. Lewis

At The Hill Academy, we believe that character development is just as important as academic achievement and athletic success. One of the most important qualities we can help develop in young people is integrity, the ability to make positive choices, demonstrate respect, and act with honesty even when there is no recognition or supervision.

Often, the moments that define character are the small ones that happen quietly throughout the day. Integrity can be seen when a student chooses to include a peer who may be feeling left out, admits to a mistake honestly, encourages a teammate after a difficult moment, or demonstrates respect during competition and collaboration. It is reflected when students stay focused during class, treat shared spaces responsibly, use kind language, and make thoughtful choices online and in person, even when adults are not immediately present.

In a K–12 environment, students are constantly learning from the people around them. Younger students observe the actions of older peers, and older students have the opportunity to model leadership through their everyday behaviour. We want our students to understand that leadership is not simply about titles, athletic ability, or recognition, it is about consistency, accountability, and how we treat others in all situations.

Integrity also plays an important role in learning and personal growth. Students who demonstrate integrity take responsibility for their actions, persevere through challenges honestly, and show resilience when facing adversity. They learn that mistakes are opportunities for growth and that strong character is built through reflection, accountability, and positive decision-making.

Families can continue to support the development of integrity at home through open conversations about honesty, empathy, accountability, and responsibility. Asking children questions such as:

  • “What does doing the right thing look like when no one is watching?”

  • “How can you show leadership through your actions?”

  • “How do your choices impact the people around you?”can help reinforce these important values in meaningful ways.

As we continue through the school year, we encourage all students to reflect on the type of classmate, teammate, leader, and community member they want to be. True character is often revealed in the moments where there is no applause, no audience, and no reward, only the choice to do what is right.

Thank you to our students, staff, and families for continuing to foster a school culture rooted in integrity, respect, accountability, and kindness. Together, we are helping shape young people who will positively impact both our school community and the world beyond.

Potential NCAA Eligibility Update & Virtual Town Hall

As previously announced, we are closely monitoring the situation of proposed changes to NCAA Eligibility and are prepared to adapt and support our students accordingly. NCAA Division I Board of Directors met on May 22nd but have not settled on any changes.

In response, we are planning to host a virtual town hall meeting when more information becomes available. Please stay tuned for updates on this information session.

Exams and Culminating Tasks

In grades 9-12, 30% of the student’s final grade will be based on a final evaluation administered at or towards the end of the course. This evaluation will be based on evidence from one or a combination of the following: an examination, a performance, an essay, and/or another method of evaluation suitable to the course content.

The final evaluation allows the student an opportunity to demonstrate comprehensive achievement of the overall expectations for the course. Students must complete this evaluation as scheduled. Please note that uniform is required on exam days.

Frequently asked questions are answered here, and the Exam Schedule can be found here.

Student-athletes have been split into 4 Houses - Blue Feather (Blue), Legacy (Gold), Hill Pride (Red) & 1845 (Black) whom they will represent on the day. All student-athletes are asked to wear their House Colours, ribbons, flags etc. to show their support on the day.

This is a great opportunity to take advantage of the savings and begin purchasing items for the upcoming school year.

Update on The Nest

We wanted to thank you all for your incredible support of The Nest this school year. It has been such a fun endeavour to bring our student athletes’ needs to fruition, and without your generosity and encouragement, we would not have been able to make it happen.

We would like to let you know that The Nest will be closing as of May 31st. June is a month full of exciting events — including Grade 8 and Grade 12 graduations, exams, and the Junior School Athletic Gala — and we must focus our attention there.

We also want to thank the students who volunteered their time to help us run The Nest. Next year, we look forward to offering many volunteer positions to both our school community and beyond.

Thank you again, and we wish you all a wonderful rest of the school year. Please note that any remaining credit on your nest cards will carry over to next school year.

Warm regards,

The Nest Team
