Hello Hill Families,
With the end of the school year, I will continue the trend of the last few years and provide some reading recommendations for The Hill community. There’s a little bit of everything that should appeal to anyone looking for a good read this summer. If you have one of your own, let me know your recommendations.
10 to 25: The Science of Motivating Young People - A recommendation from Coach Dre, this book describes what I think The Hill tries to do when working with our student-athletes. Yeager encourages adults to maintain high expectations while providing high levels of support through a mentor mindset. While many books in this genre focus on warning what not to do when raising or working with adolescents, Yeager provides a framework for supporting their development. I cannot recommend this enough for any parent or person who works with people under the age of 25.
Extreme Ownership: How Navy Seals Lead and Win - This may be the best leadership book I have read. Willink and Babin use their experiences as Navy Seals to identify key practices for leaders. When faced with life or death situations, they describe what they default to in order to ensure the success of their mission and the safety of their troops. They provide recommendations on how to apply their concepts to different situations.
Americanah - This novel about the experiences of a Nigerian woman moving to the United States and the different obstacles she faces is a powerful exploration of race, culture, and identity. Adichie writes in a clear prose while expertly exploring these deep topics.
Dungeon Crawler Carl - A complete change of pace from the other three books. Dinniman writes a series of silly novels about the end of the world. This dystopian science fiction series is easily the funniest series of books I have ever read. Several staff have been enjoying them since the beginning of the year as light reads for anyone who likes speculative fiction or humourous writing. Think of it as a more mature, humourous version of The Hunger Games.
Thank you for another great school year. Have a great summer and see you in September!
